International Training Programs in Holland

The Dutch football system has produced such legendary players as Johan Croijff, Marco Van Basten, Jaap Stam, Patrick Kluivert, Marc Overmars, Dennis Bergkamp, Ruud Van Nistelrooy and Giovanni von Bronckhorst to name just a few great players. For a country with a total population of just over 16 million people (about the same number of people living in the Bay Area of California) with only about 1 million youth players registered, they produce some of the best players in the world. For a country the size of Holland, that is quite an achievement.

How can a country like Holland with about 1 million registered soccer players become one of the leading football countries in the world? The United States has over 18 million registered soccer players, however the level of soccer does not compare between our country and the Netherlands. One clear answer to this question is the Dutch formation of the KNVB in the 1960's (The Royal Dutch Soccer Federation). This organization started making development programs for the improvement of the game; through proper education of coaches and players and the results are clear. The Dutch training methods of the youth players and the coaches plays a very important role in the development of some of the greatest players in the world.
